Well Detailed French Gilt Mirror

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This small but well detailed mirror dates from the late 1800s or early 1900s, most likely the 1800s. It has its original mirror glass which does show signs of it's age, this has not been changed and is very original. It is really quite amazing how the frame has also retained its originality too with the detail on the frame being in such fantastic condition. This mirror has been in my own house owing to the original condition and great detail but owing to a change around it is now for sale. It is a neat and rather rare size at 49cms wide and 66 high overall. Most being a bit larger. The gilt finish is again good and has only dulled to a more mellow tone owing to its age. Finding a better one for the money and in this kind of condition will be difficult if not impossible we suggest.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt mirrors from this era typically feature hand-carved wooden or moulded gesso frames finished with gold leaf application. They often incorporate decorative crestings, acanthus scrollwork, and Rococo or Louis XV design influences.

The frames were constructed from carved timber, often pine or lime, and covered with a layer of gesso plaster. Thin sheets of gold leaf were water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the surface, surrounding a mercury-backed glass plate.

Authentic examples display wear where the red or grey clay bole beneath the gilding shows through, known as distress. The reverse side often features hand-sawn timber backing boards, and the glass may exhibit foxing or dark speckling within the silvering.

Positioning a carved gilt mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or a console table creates a focal point. Combining historic gilding with clean modern architectural lines balances traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetic schemes.

Dust the gilt frame using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass separately with a damp lint-free cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding or slip behind the frame.
