Transferware printing developed in 18th-century England and reached widespread production during the Victorian era. The technique enabled complex engraved patterns, often inspired by Chinese porcelain, to be repeatedly transferred onto earthenware ceramics.

These pieces are crafted from earthenware or ironstone pottery. Cobalt oxide pigment is printed onto paper from an engraved copper plate, applied to the unglazed ceramic body, and sealed under a clear protective glaze prior to firing.

Authentic period examples often feature printed or impressed makers marks or registry diamonds on the base. Visual indicators include minor seams or overlaps in the transferred pattern and natural glaze crazing.

These plates can be mounted using wall hangers in symmetrical groupings, displayed on plate stands along sideboards or mantelpieces, or arranged inside glass-fronted cabinets to add historical interest.
