Regency Mahogany & Brass Partners Writing Table

19th century
Description

An Exceptional Quality Regency Period Mahogany And Brass, Square, Partners Writing Table, Having Attractive Gilt Tooled Leather Top With Crossbanded Edge, Over Four Drawers And Four False Drawers To Frieze, With Original Brass Moulded Decoration And Replacement Brass Star Handles, Raised On Exceptionally Elegant Turned Tapering Legs, Headed By Reeded Decoration, Terminating On Later Brass Cup Castors.

This fabulous quality regency writing table is a great example of the sterotypical, high end regency furniture which was being produced in the top workshops of the early 19th century. Indeed the brass detailed decoration, along with the distinctive reeded decoration to the top of the turned leg, along with the exceptional overall quality suggest that this partners writing table could possibly be attributed to the well known workshops of John Mclean, one of the very best cabinet makers around at the time.

It is quite unusual to find a perfectly square example of a table like this, but we think it really adds to the appeal and overall elegance. Whilst still obviously great as a typical writing table we also feel that the shape adds to the appeal of this table as a library table, a sofa table or possibly even an entrance hall table.

As is typical with a partners writing table or partners desk, it is big enough to stand centrally and allows access to drawers from opposing sides, meaning that two people could comfortably work together at this table. It is also a nice feature that both of the sides are finished in the same manner as the front and back, with false drawer fronts, meaning that the table looks basically indentical from all perspectives.

Overall the condition is good, with an extremely attractive almost new leather to the top, replacement handles and various old repairs and restorations as one would expect, none of which are aesthetically displeasing and the table is very much fit for original purpose with working keys to the drawers.

As with all items we offer for sale this partners writing table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale, ensuring it is ready for immediate placement within the home or office.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency partners writing table is a double-sided desk created during the early 19th century in Britain, designed to allow two people to work facing each other. These tables feature working drawers on opposite sides and often incorporate classical proportions, fine wood veneers, and brass embellishments.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid mahogany or rosewood veneers, accented with brass stringing, star motifs, or castors. Writing surfaces were typically inset with gilt-tooled leather or baize skivers to facilitate ease of writing with quill pens.

Authentic Regency pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, and period-correct hardware such as star-shaped knobs or brass collars. The underside often reveals hand-sawn secondary timbers like pine or oak, accompanied by genuine age-related wear.

Place the table centrally in a study, home office, or spacious living area to allow access to both sides. Pair it with structured executive chairs or vintage leather armchairs, keeping surface decor minimalist to highlight the timber grain and brass details.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the finish. Clean the leather insert using dedicated leather cream to prevent drying and cracking, keeping the table away from direct sunlight and radiators.
