First introduced in Britain during the mid-18th century, the Pembroke table is an occasional drop-leaf table designed for flexibility. Named after the Countess of Pembroke who originally commissioned the form, these tables were crafted for serving tea, writing, or light dining before being folded down and moved to the perimeter of a room.

Authentic 18th and early 19th-century examples are predominantly constructed from dense woods such as mahogany, satinwood, or walnut. They feature hinged leaves supported by wooden fly-brackets, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, stringing in contrasting timbers like boxwood, and square tapered or turned legs ending in brass castors.

Genuine Georgian Pembroke tables display hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetails on the single frieze drawer, and historical wear consistent with age, such as slight shrinkage in the timber tops. Original brass handles, castors, and iron leaf hinges with counter-sunk steel screws also indicate period authenticity.
