Landscape Oil Painting by a Wood

1920 - 1940
Description

A very interesting oil on canvas landscape in the impressionist manner by A Wood. The scene wonderfully depicts a scene of a lane over a stone bridge all in dappled light. The piece has a great use of thick impasto oil paint applied boldly giving a feel for texture and light. The work is not signed but retains the artist label on the reverse indicating it was an exhibited piece. The artist’s name A.Wood is clearly visible but I have been unable to identify the artist specifically. The painting has been professionally cleaned and some minor restoration made. The large and impressive painted frame is the original and has a great Art Deco look. The whole piece has a wonderful period look and is a fine example of English impressionism. C.1930.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Landscape oil painting involves depicting natural scenery such as mountains, forests, rivers, and rural countryside using oil-based pigments. The genre gained prominence from the seventeenth century onwards, with artists focusing on light, atmosphere, and natural topography.

Traditional oil paintings are created using natural pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil, applied to wooden panels, stretched linen, or cotton canvas. Frames from historical periods often utilise carved wood, plaster mouldings, or painted wood finishes.

Authentic paintings display natural age-related craquelure, surface oxidation, and age marks on the reverse of the canvas or board. Inspecting signature placement, original framing hardware, and hand-applied brushwork helps confirm age and authenticity.

A framed oil painting can be styled above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or as part of a gallery wall. Pairing traditional artwork with modern furniture creates visual contrast and adds texture to neutral wall spaces.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the surface gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for heavy dirt removal or varnish restoration.
