Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British marine painting in the 19th century focused on capturing the changing atmospheres, coastal topographies, and maritime activities of the British coastline. Artists often utilised dynamic brushwork and naturalistic light to depict the movement of the sea.

Traditional 19th-century seascapes were painted using oil pigments bound with linseed oil on stretched linen or cotton canvas. Artists frequently worked en plein air or used compositional sketches before completing the work in a studio.

Authentic Victorian oil paintings often display age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint surface, natural canvas discolouration on the reverse, and signatures in oil paint that exhibit consistent aging. Period frames and original stretcher bars also serve as key indicators.

A dramatic seascape can serve as a central focal point above a fireplace or sideboard, styled against neutral walls and natural timber or brass accents. Combining historic paintings with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced interior contrast.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent canvas warping and surface cracking. Dust gently using a soft camel-hair brush, and consult a professional art conservator for discoloured varnish removal or surface cleaning.
