Landscape Oil Painting by Maud Raphael Jones

1900 - 1920
Description

An interesting oil on canvas landscape by the artist Maud Raphael Jones 1863-1935. A typically tranquil view which shows a lake in a wooded valley, it is well observed and painted, I particularly like the work on the willow tree in the foreground, creating the hazy view through the thin, pointed leaves. The piece is in excellent untouched condition, signed to the lower left and dated 1912. Maud Raphael Jones 1853-1935 was a Bradford born artist and actually a man, his name came about after his father drinking with friends engaged in a bet as to whether he would call his son Maud, which he duly did. He was a self-taught artist who originally worked as a painter and decorator but he became a member of the Arcadian Art Club in the city and his talent blossomed. He exhibited at every major gallery including 22 works at the Royal Academy. This is a fine example of his landscape work and is framed in the original simple gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British landscape paintings from this era typically focus on naturalistic depictions of countryside, river scenes, and atmospheric weather conditions. Artists often employed plein air techniques or looser impressionistic brushwork to capture natural light and organic foliage.

These artworks were predominantly executed using oil paints ground from natural pigments mixed with drying oils, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were typically constructed from carved or moulded wood, finished with plaster composition and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period works display natural age indicators such as fine craquelure across the paint surface, historic canvas stretcher construction, artist signatures, and characteristic oxidisation or darkening on the reverse of the canvas and wooden frame.

A classic oil landscape in a gilded frame serves as a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard. Pairing dark, traditional oil paintings with minimalist, modern furniture creates an engaging visual contrast in contemporary spaces.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which can dissolve historic varnish. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent canvas warping and paint flaking.
