Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellarette, or wine cooler, was designed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as a portable, secure vessel for storing and cooling wine bottles within dining rooms. The sarcophagus shape drew heavy influence from classical Greco-Roman architecture, which became prominent during the Regency era.

High-grade dense woods such as flame mahogany or rosewood were typically utilised for the exterior, often decorated with brass inlay, stringing, or cast brass hardware. The interior was traditionally fitted with lead or zinc lining to hold ice and protect the exterior timber from moisture.

Authentic Regency examples feature distinctive hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, classical motifs such as lion mask handles or acanthus leaves, and evidence of historic wear around the hinges and lock plates. The mahogany wood usually exhibits a deep patination accrued over centuries.

These versatile pieces serve well as accent furniture in formal dining spaces, living room alcoves, or entryways. They can function as disguised contemporary bar storage or stand alone as sculptural historical accents alongside modern art and minimalist furnishings.

To protect the timber finish, keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources that cause drying or shrinkage. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain and dust metal hardware with a dry, soft cloth.
