Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma Province, Japan, during the late 16th century, gaining international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912). Western demand led to decorative ceramic vases being exported to Europe and North America, where many were converted into table lamps mounted on cast brass or gilt-bronze bases.
