Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of Japan during the late sixteenth century, becoming famous internationally during the Meiji period (18681912) for its finely detailed hand-painted decoration.

Satsuma items were crafted using a light-coloured earthenware body featuring a finely crackled glaze, often decorated with polychrome enamels and gold leaf detailing.
