Hiolle was born in Valenciennes, where he studied at the École Académique, before studying under François Jouffroy and Laurent Séverin Grandfils at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was runner up in the Prix de Rome of 1856 and in 1863 won the award. Exhibiting at the Salon from 1866, he won medals from 1867 to 1870. After 1870 he participated in the great public building projects of the French Third Republic with sculpture for the Palais Garnier, the Hôtel de Ville, Paris, and elsewhere. In 1873 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. At the salon of 1877 he exhibited bronze busts of Jouffroy and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and at that of 1878 a bronze statue of General Maximilien Sebastien Foy. John Milton (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) was an English poet and intellectual. His 1667 epic poem Paradise Lost, written in blank verse and including over ten chapters, was written in a time of immense religious flux and political upheaval. It addressed the fall of man, including the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and God's expulsion of them from the Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost elevated Milton's reputation as one of history's greatest poets. He also served as a civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell.

Milton achieved fame and recognition during his lifetime; his celebrated Areopagitica (1644), written in condemnation of pre-publication censorship, is among history's most influential and impassioned defences of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. His desire for freedom extended beyond his philosophy and was reflected in his style, which included his introduction of new words (coined from Latin and Ancient Greek) to the English language. He was the first modern writer to employ unrhymed verse outside of the theatre or translations.

Milton is described as the "greatest English author" by biographer William Hayley, and he remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language", though critical reception has oscillated in the centuries since his death often on account of his republicanism. Samuel Johnson praised Paradise Lost as "a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place,

A 19th-century bronze portrait bust is a three-dimensional sculpted representation of a persons head, neck, and chest, cast in bronze. These items were widely produced across Europe to commemorate literary, historical, and political figures for private collections and library settings.

Most French bronze sculptures of this period were produced using either lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. Following casting, sculptors hand-chased the metal details and applied chemical patinas to achieve consistent surface colouring.

Authentic period bronzes generally exhibit cold-chased surface details, incised artist signatures, and foundry marks near the base. Natural wear to the patinated surface typically occurs on raised highlights rather than appearing uniformly applied.

A bronze bust serves as a focal point when positioned on a modern mantelpiece, inside a wooden bookcase, or atop an accent sideboard. Pairing the dark metallic surface with contemporary literature or clean architectural lines creates balanced visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. To preserve the original patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding chemical metal polishes.
