Affortunato Gory (1895 - 1925) a French Gilt Bronze and Bust

19th century
Description

A French gilt bronze and ivory bust of a young lady, signed A. Gory

A decorative sculptural bust depicting a young lady with her head gently inclined to one side, her finely carved ivory face displaying a soft and contemplative expression. She wears an elegant headdress with a central rosette ornament and beaded band, the hair gathered beneath and flowing to the back of the head.

The shoulders and bodice are cast in richly gilt bronze, modelled as a high-necked costume with laced detail to the front and draped folds falling across the shoulders. The warm gilded surface contrasts strikingly with the smooth ivory head and neck, creating the refined material combination typical of decorative sculpture of the period.

The bust is raised on a shaped pedestal base in dark green marble which provides a strong visual contrast to the gilding above.

Signed A. Gory, Paris to the reverse of the bronze drapery.

Affortunato Gory was an Italian-born sculptor who worked in Paris in the early 20th century, producing elegant decorative figures and busts often combining bronze and ivory in the popular chryselephantine style.

Art Nouveau chryselephantine sculpture refers to mixed-media figures combining cast bronze or silver with carved alabaster, ivory, or marble, popular in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Europe.

These sculptures typically combine carved alabaster or marble for facial features and skin tones with gilt or cold-painted bronze for drapery and headwear, mounted upon a polished stone base.

Authentic period pieces feature precise hand-carving in the stone, detailed casting in the gilded metalwork, and often bear an artist signature along the base or back of the bronze.

Display the bust on a dark wood mantelpiece, console table, or inside a illuminated alcove to highlight the visual contrast between the white stone and gold metallic surfaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishes that could damage the gilding or marble finish.
