Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is a large, decorative architectural mirror designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantle. Typically produced during the 19th century, these mirrors feature substantial frames adorned with intricate gesso mouldings, gold leaf finishing, and classical motif embellishments.

19th-century gilt mirror frames were typically constructed with a solid timber base, covered in layers of fine plaster or gesso to create carved relief patterns. Thin gold leaf was applied to the surface using traditional water-gilding techniques over mirrored plate glass.

Authentic period gilt mirrors display age-appropriate characteristics, including hand-cut wood backing panels, weight consistent with original thick glass, and minor surface distress showing red or yellow clay bole beneath worn gold leaf.

Position a gilt overmantel mirror above a fireplace or a contemporary console table to serve as a dramatic focal point. The detailed, classical frame provides structural contrast when paired with clean modern furniture and neutral colour schemes.

Maintain an antique gilded frame by dusting gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture entirely away from the water-gilded gesso. Glass surfaces should be cleaned carefully using a cloth dampened with water, avoiding contact with the frame edge.
