Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French commode is a low chest of drawers, typically featuring decorative mouldings, serpentine or bombe fronts, elaborate metal handles, and slender cabriole legs characteristic of the Louis XV and French Provincial styles.

French commodes from this era were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and fruitwood, often accented with cast brass or bronze handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display period construction techniques, including hand-sawn timber marks, irregular dovetail joints, pegged joinery, and natural oxidation or wear to the wood interior and drawer undersides.

A French provincial commode functions well as a focal storage piece in an entryway, living area, or bedroom, contrasting structured contemporary decor with historic woodwork and carved details.

Preserve the timber surface by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
