French Chest of Drawers in Walnut Louis Philippe Period 19th Century

19th century

Description

French Chest of Drawers in Walnut Louis Philippe 19th Century

This is a beautifully proportioned 19th-century French walnut chest of drawers dating to the Louis Philippe period.

This chest of drawers features a concealed drawer under the rounded corner top within the frieze.

Below this are three full-width drawers with original elegant bronze drop handles and central escutcheons. Both the handles and escutcheons feature double swans and floral decoration. There are three working locks with key supplied.

This fine example of a Louis Philippe chest of drawers has a striking appearance of wild grain running throughout with two solid planks of walnut for the top. The chest stands on low, slightly splayed feet.

The drawers run smoothly and the piece is structurally sound with some minor age-related marks, presenting a warm, mellow patina developed over decades of careful service.

Having been professionally checked over, cleaned and re-polished in the traditional method with wax, it will give many years of service.

French Antiques and Objets d'art

We specialise in French antiques and work with interior designers, trade and retail in the UK and worldwide. Every piece is examined and restored when necessary to a very high standard by a professionally trained restorer with years of experience.

We have an online store and viewing in person is unfortunately not an option. If you wish to return an item please send us written notification within 48 hours of receipt. Returns can be made up to 14 days after delivery. The item must be returned in the same condition as it left and a full refund less any delivery and return delivery costs incurred by us will be issued.

Packing and Delivery

We ship larger pieces, such as tables and washstands, with specialised couriers and smaller pieces, such as sculptures and lights, with FedEx or the post.

We take great care to ensure that our pieces are well-packaged for transport. Deliveries take on average between 1 week and 3 weeks (possibly longer, depending on your location, times of year and any other factors).

We have stock in Kent and France and can provide quotes to deliver from both stores. Should a piece need importing from France, the price would be DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to include shipping, UK import VAT and customs clearance; there are no hidden costs. Please contact us by email or Whatsapp Link if you need a quote.

Payment

We accept payment by bank transfer, credit card, debit card or PayPal in either Sterling or Euros. If you purchase through Selling Antiques you can either request a delivery quote from us before payment or we will add this once we receive confirmation of your purchase.

General Information

As with all antiques, there may be small normal signs of wear and tear due to the age of a piece and its history. We aim to describe our pieces accurately – please ask for more description and photos if you would like more information. You can see our ranges, important information and terms and conditions on our website www.pyrontique.com.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (18301848), this design style is characterised by comfortable, practical forms, clean lines, soft rounded corners, and a notable lack of heavy bronze mountings or elaborate carvings.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised native hardwoods such as walnut, oak, cherry, and mahogany, frequently employing hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber frames, and cast brass or bronze drawer hardware.

Authentic pieces usually feature a upper drawer styled with a gentle convex doucine or ogee moulding, a heavy plinth base concealing short bracket feet, and original locks or escutcheons in brass.

A traditional commode can serve as a focal point in an entryway or bedroom, juxtaposed with contemporary abstract artwork, minimal modern lighting, or streamlined ceramics to balance classic craft with clean modernity.

Apply a natural beeswax paste once or twice a year using a soft cloth, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to preserve the wood grain and prevent warping or surface cracking.
