Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian writing bureau is an 18th-century piece of case furniture featuring a sloping drop-front desk surface above a series of storage drawers. Originating in Great Britain during the reign of Kings George I through George III, these pieces served as primary workstations for personal correspondence and document management.

Georgian bureaux were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, often featuring secondary woods such as pine or oak for interior drawer linings. Finishes relied on hand-applied beeswax or French polish, accented with cast brass swan-neck handles and decorative escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century bureaux display hand-cut dovetail joints, thick wood veneers on drawer fronts, and natural irregularities in drawer construction from hand tooling. The presence of period steel locks, cast brass hardware with threaded posts and square nuts, and original bracket feet further confirms period authenticity.

An antique mahogany bureau functions as a focal point in a modern home office, living area, or hallway when paired with clean-lined contemporary seating and neutral wall treatments. Modern task lighting, framed abstract prints, or understated ceramics placed nearby balance the rich wood tones and historic silhouette.

To preserve mahogany surfaces, apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinkage and timber splitting, while maintaining stable indoor humidity.
