Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau is an upright writing cabinet fitted with a sloped fold-down front that opens to reveal internal pigeonholes and small drawers, situated above a series of full-width storage drawers. Popularised during the 18th century, these pieces combine a compact writing surface with substantial drawer space.

Classic bureaux feature solid mahogany framing with flame mahogany veneers applied to the slant lid and drawer fronts. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer interiors, complemented by cast brass swan-neck handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, natural timber wear along the internal drawer runners, and cast brass hardware exhibiting light oxidisation. Era-specific design elements include fluted quarter-columns along the front edges and bracket feet supporting the base.

Place the bureau in a home office, hallway, or living room alcove to function as a compact desk and functional storage unit. Contrast the deep brown mahogany tones with modern wall colours, simple metal task lighting, and contemporary artwork.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiator units to reduce the risk of wood movement and veneer cracking. Dust regularly using a soft cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original finish.
