Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were created during the nineteenth century to sit directly above fireplace mantels, designed to reflect natural light and enlarge the visual space of reception rooms. They typically exhibit wide horizontal proportions, figurative wood veneers such as burr walnut, rounded upper corners, and intricate marquetry or moulded borders.

These pieces were built using solid hardwood frames faced with decorative veneers like burr walnut or mahogany. Pine was frequently employed as a secondary backing timber, while decorative borders featured marquetry inlays made from contrasting hardwoods, set around silvered plate glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors display natural signs of age, including subtle oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, unplaned pine backboards, and hand-cut joinery. Inspecting the veneer reveals minor natural shrinkage lines and hand-finished marquetry rather than modern synthetic overlays.

Mount or rest the mirror directly above a living room hearth or atop a hallway console table to establish a central focal point. The rich brown walnut tones create an effective contrast against modern muted paint palettes, structured plasterwork, and minimal decorative accessories.

Dust the wood regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the veneer. Clean the glass with a dry or lightly dampened cloth, ensuring liquid cleaner does not seep beneath the wooden rebate to prevent damage to the silvering.
