Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Tunbridge ware is a style of decorative inlaid woodwork featuring intricate mosaic patterns created from small, naturally coloured wood tesserae. Popular throughout the 19th century, it was commonly applied to writing boxes, small accessories, and mirror frames.

Victorian overmantel mirrors typically utilised solid or veneered woods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often featuring gilt slip inserts and silvered glass plates. Micro-mosaic geometric inlays made from diverse native and imported timber species were characteristic of Tunbridge ware examples.

Authentic pieces exhibit detailed geometric or floral mosaic borders made of individual wood blocks rather than printed patterns. Look for natural variations in wood grain within the tesserae, aged original glass, and period construction methods on the reverse timber backing.

Position the mirror above a contemporary fireplace hearth or mount it above a hallway console table to add historic depth. The rich tones of walnut and intricate inlay pattern provide balance against neutral wall palettes and understated architectural features.

Clean the timber frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding damp sponges or chemical cleansers that could loosen individual wood veneers. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain to preserve the finish and protect against environmental dryness.
