A Mahogany, Small Fusee, English Dial Wall Clock with a Rare Dark Blue and Gold 10" Dial. circa 1890.

19th century
For Sale by M. C. Taylor
Description

A pretty little clock with a very unusual dial.

The 8 day duration, rectangular plated, gut fusee movement with an Anchor Recoil escapement.

Behind a 10" diameter, flat painted iron dial which very unusually has a dark blue background with gilt writing. Having an outer, divided minute track with triangular hour marks and inner, Roman hour numerals. Above centre is signed "KILPIN St. Swithins Lane" and below centre is written "City" in Old English font, all in gold. The paired spade style hands are also gilded and the dial is behind a cast brass, hinged bezel with a sight ring and flat glass.

The mahogany case has a convex turned dial surround and the back box has an access door to the right side and a curved and locking cockbeaded door to the curved bottom.

The small size of this clock and the very rare dial makes it very attractive.

Dimensions: 12 1/4" diameter dial surround x 6" deep.

Condition: The movement is working well and keeping to time however, it is dirty and has been fitted with a hard wire to the fusee instead of a soft line therefore, should be overhauled.

The dial has been historically conserved in areas of the blue base paint which has shed due to corrosion of the iron surface. I have further attended to this with a fixative to ensure that it remains in its present condition. I felt that this course of action was paramount to ensure that a purchaser could be sure that what may be a unique combination of blue paint a gold writing was original. The dial can of course be fully restored by us to look perfect once again. The bezel is original but the brass hinge has been replaced with a steel one, this also can be reversed.

The mahogany case is in superb condition and is of a lovely colour and finish.

Price: The price is for the clock in its present and working condition. If a purchaser requires us to carry out any work to this item, then a price and timescale can be supplied upon enquiry.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An English fusee dial wall clock is a circular timepiece popularised during the 19th century, featuring a mechanical movement with a conical pulley mechanism designed to maintain constant force as the mainspring unwinds.

These timepieces are constructed with turned mahogany surrounds, cast brass bezels holding glass covers, painted metal dials, and internal brass mechanism plates.

Authentic examples feature a solid turned wooden surround with side and bottom access doors, a hand-painted dial displaying Roman numerals, and a chain-driven or gut-line fusee movement.

A circular mahogany dial clock works as a practical focal point when mounted in a hallway, above a sideboard, or within a home study environment.

Ensure the clock is mounted level on the wall, wind the movement carefully using the correct key size, and arrange for a professional horologist to clean and oil the mechanism every five to seven years.
