French Bronze During the 19th Century a time when Paris was the centre of the art world, the French bronze sculptors and their foundries were creating work with remarkable precision and detail. Table-top and figurative bronzes became a popular feature of tasteful interior decor. Leading the demand of bronzes were foundries including: Barbedienne, Susse Freres, Peyrol and Siot-Decauville. The foundries became proficient at using both lost-wax and sand cast techniques to produce exceptional bronzes of outstanding quality.

The Animalier movement originated in nineteenth-century France, focusing on the accurate, naturalistic representation of animals in bronze. Sculptors in this movement prioritised anatomical precision, detailed surface texturing, and realistic animal behaviours over allegorical subjects.

Most bronzes from this era were produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting process or sand casting. These methods allowed sculptors to replicate fine surface details before hand-chiselling the metal and applying a chemical patination.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-finished chiselling, a dark or multi-toned patination worn naturally at touch points, cast foundry marks or foundry stamps, and an appropriate weight characteristic of solid cast bronze.

Place the sculpture on a wooden sideboard, desk, or mantelpiece where light can highlight the patinated contours. Pair it with leather-bound books, brass accents, or natural stone elements to complement its metallic texture.
