Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is an 18th-century chest of drawers supported by long legs, originating in England and North America as a small side table or dressing table. Characterised by three or more drawers and a shaped apron, it served as a versatile surface in Georgian bedrooms and reception spaces.

Mahogany became the primary timber during the mid-to-late Georgian era due to its strength, tight grain, and deep warm brown colour. Construction techniques involved hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak secondary timbers, and cast brass backplate handles.

Authentic Georgian lowboys display hand-cut dovetails, irregular hand-planed timber surfaces, and natural wear patterns along the drawer runners and feet. Typical period design elements include slender cabriole legs terminating in pad or claw feet and brass swan-neck handles with threaded posts.

A Georgian lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console, side table, or compact desk. Placing contemporary artwork above the table and pairing it with modern decorative ceramics creates a curated contrast between historical and contemporary styles.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. Maintain a stable indoor environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fading.
