Long-distance shopping with Stags Head Antiques

Internet shopping promises a world of possibilities, but there are circumstances when one is reminded that it is the people behind the website who deserve full credit for the shopping experience.

It began late one Saturday night, when I decided to buy an over-mantle mirror from Stags Head Antiques. Getting a large mirror safely from Hampshire to Aberdeen was a concern, but I was reassured by Steve Sly (the owner) that his stock was regularly freighted around the country.

The mirror was extremely well wrapped at the shop, but due to my northerly location, could not be sent with the usual freight agents. An alternative courier delivered my mirror, but to my horror, broke the frame - with the evidence of poor handling and breakage all contained within the careful wrapping. Steve was as upset as myself, and instantly offered me the option of either a full refund, or costs for repairs – costs which the courier refused to honour, despite charging insurance for the delivery service.

Steve offered to arrange repairs in Central Scotland, but as this would have entailed two 3 hour round-trips from home, I elected to have the work done in Aberdeen. I have subsequently had the mirror repaired by a restorer in Aberdeen, and happily the frame is almost perfect again. Steve, as promised, has transferred the full costs for this repair into my account, and we have both learned a valuable lesson: never trust non-specialised courier companies!

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to thank you for your help and efficiency with the refectory table we purchased from you.

I will admit to being slightly unsure about purchasing a table I’d never seen in person, and was also slightly unsure of the finish of the table when it initially arrived as it had a far greater sheen to the surface than expected.

However, now I have got used to this it is without doubt the perfect table for the room with many a compliment being made (and offers to purchase)

We have since found eight 1930s matching oak dining chairs from our local auction, had them reupholstered and they compliment the table perfectly.
