How do you open a tantalus?

Most tantalus frames require a functioning key to unlock the top handle bar, which swings back to release the glass decanters. Without the original key, a locksmith or specialist dealer must often pick the lock to avoid damaging the surrounding wood.

What is the difference between a tantalus and a decanter set?

A tantalus specifically incorporates a locking mechanism that traps the stoppers and necks of the decanters inside a rigid frame. A standard decanter set rests freely upon a tray or inside an open frame without security locks.

How should I clean antique decanters?

Antique crystal requires gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding harsh thermal shocks from sudden temperature changes. Stubborn interior staining responds to non-abrasive cleaning beads rather than harsh chemical detergents.

How do I date a wooden spirit tantalus?

Dating relies on the primary timber, the style of the brass or silver-plated mountings, and the construction of the lock. Victorian and Edwardian examples typically display heavy oak or exotic veneers with robust mechanical locking bars.
