What is a vintage tufted couch?

A vintage tufted couch is a nineteenth or early twentieth-century seating piece featuring button-tufted upholstery across the back and arms. These items include traditional Chesterfield sofas, settees, and chaise longues. They reflect historical design periods such as Victorian, Regency, and Napoleon III, utilising robust timber frames and leather, velvet, or fabric coverings.

How do I choose between leather and fabric?

Leather options, particularly traditional brown or red hand-dyed finishes, offer durability and develop a distinct patina over decades of use. They suit high-traffic seating areas. Fabric and velvet choices provide softer textures and alternative colour palettes, often appearing on chaise longues or period drawing-room settees.

How were these couches constructed?

Constructed using hardwood frames from materials like mahogany and walnut, these couches rely on traditional coil springs and horsehair stuffing for internal support. Deep buttoning secures the interior padding to the outer leather or fabric, ensuring the surface retains its form and firmness under regular sitting.

Can I find pieces that need restoration?

Listings occasionally feature items designated for reupholstering or presented in un-restored condition. These pieces allow buyers to select custom leather colours or new fabric coverings. Restored examples arrive with hand-dyed finishes and revived internal padding, ready for immediate placement in a home.
