What is vintage table silverware?

Vintage table silverware comprises dining utensils, serving dishes and canteens produced during the Victorian, Edwardian and later twentieth-century eras. These items range from solid silver napkin rings and toast racks to extensive plated cutlery canteens housed in wooden chests.

How do I clean sterling silver?

Sterling silver requires gentle cleaning with specialised silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without scratching the surface. Frequent light cleaning preserves the hallmarks and metal finish better than aggressive abrasive methods.

Are canteens complete?

Cutlery canteens sometimes retain their full complement of original forks, spoons and knives, though partial sets also occur. Checking the fitted interior trays helps determine if service pieces match the main flatware pattern.

What do hallmarks mean?

Hallmarks stamped into silver items identify the testing office, the metal standard and the specific year of manufacture. These official stamps provide a reliable method for dating British tableware and identifying the maker workshop.
