What is vintage silverware made from?

The objects utilise sterling silver, solid silver, and silver plate as primary metallic components. Additional materials such as enamel, mahogany, brass, velvet, silk, and agate appear across various items. Items range from unplated base metals to high-purity continental silver standards, often combined with fitted wooden storage cabinets or display frames.

How do I date a silver piece?

Dating relies heavily on official hallmarks stamped into the metal, which record the assay office and the year of manufacture. Stylistic indicators also help, such as the geometric lines of Art Deco pieces or the ornate flourishes of Victorian design. Makers' marks and regional hallmarks provide further evidence to narrow the production era down to specific decades or reigns like George V.

How should I clean silver?

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning methods suitable for the specific material, avoiding harsh abrasives that can wear away silver plating or damage enamel and stone handles. Specialised silver cloths help manage natural tarnish without harming the underlying metal. Enamelled pieces and items with velvet or silk linings demand particular care to preserve their delicate decorative components.

Edwardian and Victorian examples often feature a central loop handle for easy transport around the breakfast table.
