How do I clean vintage silver plate?

Clean these pieces using a soft cloth and a gentle cream formulated specifically for silver plate. Avoid harsh dips or abrasive scrubbing to preserve the thin metallic layer. Regular light dusting prevents tarnish buildup in recessed details, particularly on heavily decorated items like candelabras and figural desk accessories.

Can I use these items daily?

Many items, such as wine buckets, coasters and knife rests, function well for modern dining and desk use. Handle them with care to protect the glass inserts and plated surfaces. Items like altar crosses and sculptural figures serve primarily as decorative accents rather than utilitarian tableware.

How do I date an electroplated piece?

Examine the style of the base metal, the mounting screws and any maker marks stamped into the underside. Victorian pieces often display registration diamonds or traditional maker ciphers. Mid-century Italian and French pieces generally feature cleaner, more abstract lines associated with nineteen-fifties and sixties modernism.

What is the difference between silver and silver plate?

Solid silver objects consist entirely of precious metal throughout their structure, whereas silver-plated items use a base metal core covered by a thin external layer of silver. Plated items offer the visual appeal and reflective quality of solid silver at a different tier of manufacture and weight.
