How do I clean a scrubbed top?

Scrubbed wooden tops respond well to warm water and mild soap applied with a stiff brush along the grain. This maintains the pale, weathered finish without darkening the timber. Allow the wood to dry naturally after washing to prevent warping. Avoid modern chemical varnishes that seal the breathable surface.

Are these tables suitable for daily dining?

These tables were built for rigorous daily labour in kitchens and farmhouses, making them robust for contemporary dining use. Their solid timber construction handles daily family meals with ease. Patina accumulates naturally through use, so minor marks add to the historical character rather than detracting from the piece.

What is the difference between a dairy table and a kitchen table?

Dairy tables originated in spaces dedicated to milk processing and cheese making, often requiring frequent scrubbing of the soft pine boards. Kitchen tables served broader domestic food preparation and dining functions. Both share utilitarian origins, though dairy tables sometimes feature specific proportions or sloped tops suited to liquid drainage.

How do I identify original paint?

Original paint on these tables typically exhibits multiple thin layers showing wear at touch points and edges. Examination under natural light reveals crazing and subtle colour variations impossible to replicate with modern applications. Look for paint that integrates into the grain rather than sitting as a uniform plastic film over the timber.
