How do I hang a heavy framed portrait?

Secure fixings directly into wall studs or utilise appropriate cavity anchors rated for the weight of the wood and canvas. Heavy gilt frames require robust picture wire and sturdy wall hooks. Ensure the hanging height positions the centre of the portrait at eye level for optimal viewing in a room.

What lighting suits a gilt frame?

Warm, indirect lighting enhances the metallic sheen of giltwood frames without causing glare on the canvas surface. Picture lights mounted above the frame cast focused illumination downward. Avoid placing these artworks in direct sunlight to protect oil paint and paper from fading over time.

Can I mix different painting periods together?

Displaying eighteenth-century canvases alongside mid-century pieces creates visual contrast within a curated interior wall arrangement. Similar frame finishes help unify works from diverse decades. Balancing large oil portraits with smaller pastels or miniatures adds variety to a gallery display.
