What is a vintage platinum band?

A vintage platinum band is a ring or bracelet made primarily from platinum, often dating from the early to mid-twentieth century. These items include wedding bands, engagement rings, and eternity designs. Many incorporate diamonds, sapphires, or rubies set into durable white metal. They reflect the stylistic shifts from Edwardian floral motifs to geometric Art Deco patterns.

How do I identify Art Deco platinum bands?

Art Deco platinum bands are characterised by geometric lines, symmetry, and architectural motifs typical of the 1920s and 1930s. They frequently utilise calibre-cut gemstones and intricate openwork. These pieces often combine platinum with old cut diamonds and contrasting stones like emeralds or rubies. The metalwork displays sharp angles and precise millegrain detailing.

Are platinum bands durable for daily wear?

Platinum is exceptionally dense and resistant to wear, making it a reliable choice for everyday use. Over time, the metal develops a soft patina rather than wearing away. Prongs and settings should still be inspected periodically to ensure stones remain secure. Proper care preserves the original hand-engraving and structural integrity.

What are old cut diamonds?

Old cut diamonds are historically faceted stones shaped by hand prior to the standardisation of the modern brilliant cut. They possess distinct optical characteristics including smaller tables and deeper pavilions. These diamonds produce broad, warm flashes of light under candlelight or natural illumination. They serve as central elements in Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery.
