What are vintage plaster figures made of?

These pieces consist primarily of plaster, sometimes combined with composition materials, wood, terracotta or brass for structural reinforcement. Surfaces are frequently finished with paint, polychrome pigments or gold leaf. Makers utilised these materials to achieve the weight and visual appearance of heavier substances like stone or bronze while maintaining workable production methods.

How do I identify the period of a piece?

Dating relies on stylistic markers such as Neoclassical drapery, Edwardian realism or Art Deco geometric lines. Inscriptive details, artist signatures and manufacturing methods also provide chronological context. Examining the underlying materials and surface patination helps confirm whether a piece originates from the nineteenth century or the mid-twentieth century.

How were advertising figures used?

Commercial figures functioned as shop display pieces and promotional signage in retail environments. Examples include lingerie mannequins, butcher display pigs and terrier doorstops. Businesses utilised these durable plaster items to attract customer attention directly inside and outside their premises.

Where should I place these sculptures?

These figures suit tabletops, mantelpieces, dedicated display pedestals or library shelving depending on their scale. Larger statues and Caryatids function well as architectural accents in hallways or living spaces. Placement should account for natural light sources to highlight the modelled contours and painted surface details.
