What is a vintage parlor table used for?

These tables served various domestic functions in nineteenth and twentieth-century sitting rooms, holding decorative objects, reading materials or oil lamps. Many designs accommodated social pastimes, acting as surfaces for card games, board games or tea service within the home.

How do I identify an Edwardian table?

Edwardian tables generally date from around 1900 to 1910, often utilising lighter timbers like mahogany and satinwood with delicate inlay. They frequently appear as two-tier occasional tables or draw inspiration from earlier George III designs. Construction during this period prioritizes lighter proportions and refined tapered legs compared to heavier mid-Victorian furniture.

Are French and English styles different?

French tables from the selection often incorporate Louis XV or Louis XVI revival styles, featuring painted and gilded finishes, black lacquer or marble tops. English pieces tend to focus on mahogany, rosewood and structured occasional or nest formats. Both traditions utilised high-grade veneers, but continental pieces lean toward decorative surface ornamentation and curved cabriole lines.

How should I care for a wood table top?

Maintain polished wood surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or excessive moisture. Preservation depends on protecting antique French polish and delicate marquetry inlay from spills and heat. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps nourish aged timbers without building up residue on the grain.
