What defines a parlor chair?

Parlor chairs are decorative seats produced during the Victorian and Edwardian periods for formal reception rooms. They emphasise aesthetic appeal alongside functional comfort. These pieces typically feature exposed wood frames in mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, paired with upholstered seats and backs.

How do I date a parlor chair?

Dating relies on identifying stylistic markers, timber choices, and construction methods. Victorian pieces often use rosewood and walnut with balloon backs, while Edwardian examples favour inlaid mahogany and lighter frames. Examining the upholstery webbing and interior joinery provides additional clues regarding the decade of manufacture.

Are these chairs suitable for daily use?

Most vintage parlor chairs function well in modern homes when placed in low-traffic areas. Their sturdy hardwood frames remain durable, though nineteenth-century cushioning may require professional restoration for sustained comfort. Careful placement away from direct sunlight protects sensitive fabrics and polished wood finishes.

What is a salon suite?

A salon suite consists of a matching set of seating furniture, usually comprising a settee and multiple armchairs or side chairs. These groupings were designed to create a unified aesthetic in formal drawing rooms. Surviving sets often share identical wood veneers, upholstery fabrics, and carved motifs.
