What is a vintage painted charger used for?

These large plates were traditionally placed beneath smaller course plates at formal dining tables to add status and colour to the setting. Over time, collectors moved them to walls, sideboards and display cabinets to showcase the painted surface. Today, they serve purely as decorative art objects. Their broad diameters make them ideal focal points for interior styling.

How do I hang a heavy charger safely?

Hanging large ceramic or porcelain plates requires sturdy, adjustable spring-loaded plate hangers that distribute weight evenly across the rim. Ensure the wall fixing is anchored securely into a stud or uses a proper wall plug. Avoid wire or adhesive disc hangers on heavy earthenware or porcelain pieces. Check the tension of the springs periodically to maintain a secure grip.

How do I distinguish Delftware from Japanese Imari?

Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware featuring opaque white glazes painted predominantly in blue or soft polychrome colours, often with European or Chinese transitional motifs. Imari ware is hard-paste porcelain characterised by rich cobalt blue combined with iron red and gold leaf. Examining the foot rim and the weight of the ceramic helps confirm the material. Porcelain feels denser and rings when lightly tapped, whereas earthenware is more porous.

Can I use these plates for food?

Historic decorative plates are not recommended for serving food, particularly items with overglaze enamel or gold leaf decoration. Older glazes may contain lead or other substances unsuited for modern culinary use. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting or careful wiping with a dry cloth. Moisture can damage old body materials or fragile painted surfaces.
