What is a monks bench?

A monks bench is a convertible seat with a backrest that folds over to create a table surface. The base typically incorporates a lift-up lid revealing a storage compartment underneath. Historically used in smaller halls and living spaces to save room, these benches combine seating, table space, and storage into one compact item.

How do draw leaf tables work?

Draw leaf tables feature two sliding leaves hidden directly beneath the main tabletop. To extend the surface, you pull the leaves out from each end while the centre section drops slightly into place. This design lets you adjust the table length quickly for meals without needing to store separate boards away from the table.

Are these dining sets solid oak?

The listings include both solid oak and oak veneer construction methods across different periods. Solid oak pieces utilise heavy timber throughout the framework and top surfaces. Other items apply oak veneer over a secondary wood substrate, a method used to create stable large surfaces and decorative grain patterns.

How do I care for vintage oak?

Vintage oak benefits from regular dusting with a dry or slightly damp cloth to prevent grit accumulation on the wood finish. Avoid placing timber furniture near direct heat sources or in strong sunlight to prevent drying and fading. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps nourish the wood surface and maintain its natural lustre over time.
