How do I date a mirror cabinet?

Dating relies upon timber selection, hardware style, and construction methods visible within the carcass and drawers. Victorian pieces often use heavier proportions and rich mahogany, whilst Edwardian designs lean towards lighter oak and satinwood. Mirror plates also offer clues, as older glass can show subtle foxing or hand-bebevelled edges. Comparing the overall aesthetic to documented periods helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Can these cabinets be dismantled for moving?

Many larger wardrobes and multi-part cabinets are designed to be taken apart for transport and installation. They utilise pegged joints, screws, or knock-down bolts concealed within the interior. Smaller side cabinets and bedside pieces usually remain as single solid units. Checking the interior joints reveals whether a piece breaks down into manageable sections.

How do I clean the mirror glass safely?

Cleaning requires a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner applied sparingly to avoid seeping behind the silvered backing. Spraying the cloth rather than the glass prevents liquid pooling at the wooden frame edges. Harsh chemicals or abrasive pads must be avoided to protect both the antique glass and the surrounding timber polish. Regular dusting preserves the clarity of the reflection.

Are the mirrors original to the pieces?

Original mirrors often display minor age spots, slight distortion in the reflection, or traditional hand-bevelled borders. Replacements usually look overly clear and lack the subtle imperfections of nineteenth or early twentieth-century glass. Examining the back of the door and the mirror fixings can indicate whether the glass has been replaced over time. Original plates add authenticity to the cabinet.
