How do I clean a marble sculpture?

Dust the stone gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove surface particles without scratching the polished finish. Avoid using household detergents, acidic cleaners or excessive water, which can damage the porous surface of marble and alabaster. For stubborn grime on the stone, consult a specialist conservator rather than applying chemical solvents. Keep metal components dry and separate from moisture to preserve their original patination.

Where should I place a heavy marble piece?

Position these sculptures on sturdy, level pieces of furniture such as heavy sideboards, desks or dedicated console tables that can easily support the substantial weight of stone and metal. Ensure the display surface is stable to prevent tipping. Keep the sculpture away from direct sunlight, radiators and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress natural stone and cause delicate joints or patinated metal finishes to deteriorate over time.

What is the difference between marble and alabaster?

Marble is a hard, durable metamorphic rock with prominent veining, making it ideal for heavy structural bases and robust classical busts. It resists everyday knocks better than softer stones. Alabaster is a softer, highly tactile stone with a translucent quality that lets light pass just beneath the surface. It was frequently selected for nineteenth-century portrait busts and intricate architectural models where fine detail was paramount.

How can I tell art deco pieces apart from earlier ones?

Art deco sculptures feature streamlined geometric forms, stepped marble bases, and subjects such as sleek panthers, dancers and modern lamp designs. They reflect the aesthetic of the interwar period. Earlier nineteenth-century works typically lean towards neoclassical themes, grand tour architectural souvenirs, or realistic animalier studies with ornate detailing and traditional dark patinated bronze on fossil marble or plain stone plinths.
