How do I care for my vintage diamond ring?

Clean your ring gently using warm soapy water and a soft-bristled brush to remove everyday oils from beneath the stones. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or ultrasonic baths that might damage delicate settings or softer surrounding gems. Have a professional jeweller inspect the prongs and mountings periodically to ensure the diamonds and coloured stones remain secure in their historical settings.

Can these rings be resized?

Most gold and platinum rings can be altered by a skilled bench jeweller who understands antique construction methods. The feasibility depends on the band design, particularly if engraving or channel-set stones extend all the way around the hoop. Consult an experienced specialist who can adjust the band without compromising the structural integrity of the original gallery or damaging side stones.

How do I identify the period of a ring?

Examine the overall design style, such as the geometric symmetry of Art Deco or the organic floral motifs of the Victorian era. Manufacturing techniques, metal choices like platinum versus yellow gold, and diamond cutting styles offer further clues to the decade of creation. Look for hallmarks stamped inside the shank, which often provide assay office marks and date letters corresponding to specific years of manufacture.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

Diamonds rank among the hardest natural materials, making them well-suited for regular wear when properly secured in robust platinum or gold mountings. Rings featuring softer accent stones like opals or emeralds require greater mindfulness during daily activities. Remove your ring during heavy manual work, swimming, or exercising to protect the antique metalwork and prevent accidental impact to the primary gems.
