What periods do these lamps date from?

These lamps primarily date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, spanning the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additional examples reflect later Art Deco and Neoclassical revival designs. Construction styles shift from ornate nineteenth-century brass oil lamps to cleaner twentieth-century electric forms. Most pieces carry stylistic markers from the 1860s through to the 1930s.

How do I identify a converted oil lamp?

Converted oil lamps typically feature a central brass burner mechanism at the top of the glass font where the original wick adjuster sat. These fittings have been adapted to house electrical wiring. Many retain their original duplex burners and collars even after conversion. The presence of a heavy stepped base and a distinct fuel reservoir indicates the original lighting function.

What glass colours are typical?

Typical glass colours include cranberry, opaline, crystal, and pale blue. Cranberry and opaline variants are especially prominent among Victorian examples. Fonts and shades often feature contrasting hues, pairing white opaline glass with pink or etched glass shades. Cut crystal appears frequently in late nineteenth-century designs.

How do I clean an antique glass lamp?

Clean glass fonts and shades gently with warm soapy water using a soft cloth, avoiding harsh abrasives on decorated surfaces. Metal components require minimal intervention to preserve their historic patina. Unscrew removable glass reservoirs before cleaning to prevent accidental damage to the brass collars. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly.
