Will a standard mattress fit a vintage french corbeille bed?

These historical beds often feature dimensions that differ slightly from modern standard sizing. Custom or adjusted mattresses are frequently required to ensure a correct fit within the curved wooden or upholstered rails. Checking internal measurements before acquisition prevents complications with standard bedding. Many modern suppliers can tailor mattress dimensions to match these continental frames.

How do I care for the painted and polished wood surfaces?

Routine maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth to protect fragile painted finishes and polished walnut timbers. Avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture preserves the integrity of antique wood and textile components. Wax can be applied sparingly to unpainted wooden areas to nourish the grain. Harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided on all historic surfaces.

How do I identify a Louis XV style frame from a later revival?

Authentic period pieces exhibit construction methods, tool marks, and patina consistent with nineteenth-century workshop practices. Revival pieces often display machine-tooled elements and standardised hardware alongside twentieth-century timber conditioning. Examining the underside and interior joints reveals the age of the timber and assembly techniques. Stylistic motifs in genuine revival pieces remain faithful to eighteenth-century proportions.

Can these beds be easily dismantled for transport?

Most antique European bed frames utilise traditional iron bolts and slot-in side rails designed for dismantling. The curved corbeille headboard and footboard remain as solid single units, which require careful handling during relocation. Professional removalists experienced with antique furniture are recommended to manage heavy timber components. Ensuring all original bed bolts are accounted for protects the structural stability upon reassembly.
