What is the difference between a fender and a fire screen?

A fender is a low metal barrier that sits directly on the hearth floor around the perimeter of the fireplace to contain ash and rolling embers. A fire screen is an upright panel placed directly in front of the fireplace opening to block radiant heat and catch sparks.

How do club fenders differ from standard hearth guards?

Standard hearth guards and fenders are purely protective barriers designed to keep people and furnishings at a safe distance from the fire. Club fenders incorporate cushioned seats along the top rails, allowing people to sit close to the warmth of the hearth.

How do I measure for a vintage hearth guard?

Measure the width and depth of your hearth stone to ensure the outer dimensions of the fender or guard fit comfortably within the space. Take into account any projecting hearth surrounds or fire irons that might obstruct extending or folding mechanisms.

How do folding spark guards operate?

Folding spark guards utilise hinged metal panels that expand outward to cover the width of the fireplace opening during use. They collapse flat against one another for convenient storage when the fire is unlit.

Can these metal guards be polished?

Solid brass and copper components can be polished with appropriate metal creams, though many collectors prefer to preserve the aged patination. Lacquered or blackened finishes require gentle dusting rather than abrasive cleaning to avoid damaging the surface.
