What defines a cocktail ring?

A cocktail ring is a large, eye-catching piece of jewellery traditionally worn to evening parties and social gatherings. These rings deliberately break away from conservative everyday styles by utilising oversized stones and bold precious metal settings. Within this selection, pieces often feature prominent emerald centres paired with diamond halos or geometric mounting styles from the twentieth century.

How can I tell an Art Deco ring apart?

Art Deco rings are easily recognised by their strict geometric symmetry, use of platinum or white gold, and straight lines. They frequently incorporate step-cut stones and contrasting dark or bright accents like onyx or diamonds. Pieces from this era showcase an architectural quality that stands in contrast to the flowing, organic curves of earlier Edwardian or later mid-century designs.

Are these emeralds treated?

Many emeralds undergo traditional clarity enhancement using oils or resins to fill natural surface-reaching fissures. Documentation accompanying certain pieces specifies the minor or negligible presence of such oils. Evaluating a specific ring involves checking any provided certification details, which outline the exact geological origin and treatment level of the central green beryl.

How do I care for a vintage ring?

Caring for a vintage emerald ring requires gentle handling due to the natural inclusion patterns inherent in the green beryl. Professional cleaning should avoid harsh ultrasonic baths or chemical dips that might disturb traditional gemstone treatments or fragile settings. Regular inspections by a specialist jeweller ensure that the claws holding the central stone and surrounding diamonds remain secure within their gold or platinum mountings.
