Where should I display a heavy marble bust?

Heavy stone and marble sculptures require robust support, ideally a dedicated column pedestal or a sturdy reinforced console table. Placing them at eye level ensures the facial details and carving quality can be properly observed. Ensure the surface is level and capable of bearing considerable weight, as materials like Carrara marble and alabaster are remarkably dense. Avoid placement near direct heat sources or high foot traffic where the piece might be accidentally dislodged.

What is the difference between bronze and bronzed metal?

Solid bronze is an alloy of copper and tin created through traditional foundry casting, offering substantial weight, durability and a rich natural patination over time. It represents the premium standard for sculptural longevity. Bronzed metal or cast iron pieces utilise cheaper base metals finished with a surface coating to simulate the appearance of true bronze. These alternatives provide a similar visual effect at a different weight and production cost.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century plaster bust?

Nineteenth-century plaster sculptures often exhibit heavy construction, layered historical patination, and wear consistent with age, such as minor surface chips or mellowed paint. Many incorporate signature stamps, foundry marks or inscriptions relating to the subject. Closer inspection under magnification reveals the texture of the original plaster composition and how multiple layers of historic paint or wash have settled into the recessed details of the moulding.
