How do I identify a Victorian brass lamp?

Victorian brass lamps often feature heavy reeded or Corinthian columns, solid construction, and substantial weight. They frequently show nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques like sand casting with hand-finished detailing. Look for period wiring adaptations, patination that indicates age, and stylistic markers such as Rococo revival or Gothic Revival influences shared with the broader decorative arts of the reign.

Were these lamps originally electric?

Many items from the nineteenth century and early twentieth century began life as oil lamps, candlesticks, or gas fixtures before later conversion to electricity. Component parts like burners and fonts were adapted to house electrical wiring. Other designs, particularly from the 1920s onwards, were manufactured specifically for electrical use, including adjustable reading lights and specialised desk lamps.

What is an adjustable reading lamp?

An adjustable reading lamp uses hinged arms, pivot joints, or sliding mechanisms to direct light precisely where needed on a desk or workspace. These functional pieces gained popularity in the early twentieth century. They allow the user to alter the height and angle of the shade without moving the heavy base of the lamp.

How do I care for vintage brass?

Vintage brass benefits from gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of dirt in engraved or cast recesses. Avoid abrasive metal polishes that strip away the natural historic patina. If cleaning is necessary, use a mild, pH-neutral soap solution applied sparingly and dried immediately to protect the surface finish.
