What were these buckets originally used for?

These vessels served diverse domestic functions, ranging from holding coal by the hearth to chilling wine at the dining table. Many were also built as storage bins for peat, logs, or dining plates. Over time, owners repurposed them as umbrella stands or plant holders, adapting their sturdy build for new rooms in the house.

How do I care for a wooden bucket?

Keep the wood nourished with appropriate wax or oil to prevent the timber staves from drying out and shrinking. Avoid placing wet plants directly inside unlined timber vessels. Use protective plastic or metal inner saucers for potted plants to protect the historic interior surfaces from moisture damage.

How can I tell the period of a piece?

Examine the timber species, the hand tools used on the staves, and the style of the brass hardware. Georgian and eighteenth-century examples often use rich mahogany with fine dovetails or pegged joints. Later Victorian and Edwardian pieces frequently employ oak, sometimes showing Arts and Crafts influences or specific maker plaques.

Are these buckets waterproof?

Some pieces retain their original metal or zinc liners designed to hold liquids or damp peat without leaking. Other items have lost their inner linings or were built strictly for dry storage like coal and logs. Check the interior of the vessel to determine whether it can safely hold water or if it requires a secondary liner.
