How do I identify original paint?

Original paint surfaces typically show consistent craquelure, natural wear patterns and age-related oxidation beneath subsequent layers. Close inspection often reveals the underlying preparation coats used by nineteenth-century decorators. Later repainting can sometimes be detected by modern pigment chemistry or the absence of wear in high-contact areas like armrests and chair legs.

Were these chairs used indoors or outdoors?

The category encompasses both indoor furnishings and heavy garden architecture. Cast iron benches and rocking chairs were designed specifically for exterior courtyards and lawns, while satinwood and papier-mâché pieces remained strictly inside. Iron garden furniture required durable lead-based paints to withstand weather, whereas salon and library chairs utilised delicate decorative finishes.

How should I care for painted wooden surfaces?

Maintain stable relative humidity and protect the painted timber from direct sunlight to prevent cracking and fading. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical solvents that lift historic finishes. For iron garden pieces, keep them dry during damp winter months to arrest oxidation of the metal beneath the paint layer.

What is scumble paint?

Scumble paint is a decorative technique where a semi-opaque glaze is brushed over a lighter base colour and manipulated with combs or rags to simulate richer timber grains. It was widely used on nineteenth-century side and hall chairs to elevate simpler woods. This finish creates depth and texture while remaining distinct from solid flat-colour painting.
