Can I convert an old oil lamp base?

Many nineteenth-century examples on the market have already undergone conversion to electricity, often retaining their original burners or collars for safety and historical continuity. If you acquire an unconverted piece, a qualified electrician can route modern wiring through the existing central channel without damaging the structural integrity of the metal or ceramic body.

How do I choose the right shade?

Selecting a shade depends on the physical proportions and weight of the column, ensuring the fixture remains visually balanced and stable. Fabric shades in silk or linen, patterned with Victorian or Edwardian motifs, complement brass and ceramic bodies while diffusing light evenly across a room.

What maintenance do metal bases need?

Brass and silver-plated columns require minimal intervention beyond dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of grime in recessed chasing and fluting. Avoid aggressive metal polishes that strip away patination or damage thin silver plating, preserving the aged surfaces built up over the decades.

How do I date a lamp base?

Dating relies on identifying material combinations, manufacturing marks, and stylistic revivals such as neoclassical columns or Japanese Meiji bronzes. Patents stamped into the metalwork or registration marks on ceramic bodies provide precise production years, while general construction methods offer broader period attribution.
