What is a bureau plat?

A bureau plat is a freestanding writing desk designed to sit away from the wall with finished decoration on all sides. These desks typically feature leather-lined writing surfaces and multiple drawers beneath the top. Cabinetmakers utilised fine timbers like kingwood and rosewood, embellishing the frame with ormolu mounts in the French style. They served as functional workspaces for writing and correspondence in nineteenth-century homes.

How do I identify French revival styles?

French revival furniture displays characteristic Louis XV and Rococo motifs, including asymmetric C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and floral marquetry. Makers combined these decorative elements with gilded bronze mounts to emulate eighteenth-century royal furniture. These pieces emerged during the nineteenth century when Victorian cabinetmakers reinterpreted continental designs for British interiors. The presence of shaped aprons, cabriole legs, and elaborate gilt bronze trim generally indicates this style.

Where should I place an occasional table?

An occasional table functions well in a drawing room or sitting room beside a sofa or beneath a wall mirror. These smaller surfaces accommodate lamps, decorative clocks, or small ornaments without dominating the floor space. Because many examples feature finished marquetry and gilt mounts on all sides, they look effective when positioned away from walls. Their decorative timber grain and bronze hardware add visual warmth to unused corners.

How do I care for gilt bronze mounts?

Gilt bronze and ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent the accumulation of dirt in recessed areas. Avoid using abrasive metal cleaners or chemical polishes, which can strip the thin layer of gold. Maintaining a stable room temperature away from direct sunlight protects the underlying timber and prevents the lacquer on the bronze from degrading. Regular light maintenance preserves the original metallic sheen.
