What is a tantalus used for?

A tantalus holds decanters within a locking frame designed to restrict access to spirits while displaying them on a sideboard or table. The locking mechanism prevents servants or guests from pouring drinks without permission. Cabinetmakers housed these in oak, mahogany and coromandel, often lining the interior to protect the cut crystal decanters inside during use.

How do I identify a Victorian decanter?

Victorian decanters typically feature heavy lead crystal bodies with hand-cut facets, three-ring necks and distinctive coloured glass such as Bristol blue, ruby or green. Many incorporate sterling silver mounts or hanging bottle labels. Looking closely at the base reveals a polished pontil mark left from hand-blowing, distinguishing older production from modern pressed glass.

What is a field campaign spirit set?

A field campaign spirit set provided portable refreshment for officers and travellers during the nineteenth century. These leather or wooden cases held glass flasks and silver cups securely for transit. They combine utilitarian durability with refined materials, reflecting the lifestyle of Victorian travellers on the move.

How do I clean antique silver plate barware?

Cleaning antique silver plate requires gentle washing in warm soapy water with a soft cloth to remove dust and residue. Avoid abrasive dips or harsh scrubbing that can wear through the thin silver layer. Patina builds up over decades of service, so preserving the soft surface sheen remains preferable to achieving a mirror polish.
